Sony Kills Go! Messenger Service
A lack of users is being blamed by Sony for its decision to shut down its Go! Messenger service for the PSP in Europe. Launched just 9 months ago with BT, Go! Messenger allowed owners of the PSP and the optional Go! Cam videocam to send texts, chat and make video calls to other PSP users via Wi-Fi hotspots. It was touted as a big step forward in making the PSP a functional communications device as well as a handheld gaming and entertainment console. According to a note posted on Sony's European PlayStation site [now removed]:

MWC 2009: Solio Announces In-Car Solar Hands-free Gadget
We're all for green products and utilising renewable energy sources to power our gadgets, but we think Solio may have gone a little too far with this one. The purveyor of all things solar powered added another gadget to its collection at the MWC in the form of the Solio Communicator.

MWC 2009: Modu Reveals Accessories For Modular Phones
The Modu modular phone, which we reported on last week, seems like quite an interesting idea and predictably the MWC has revealed a few innovative ways in which it can be used. Amongst the selection are the speaker jacket (shown pictured above) that offers access to the handset on one side and a pair of JBL cones on the other, along with dedicated play controls.

MWC 2009: Mobile Phones To Standardise Chargers By 2012
More phone news now but of an interesting and frankly long-overdue move to standardise phone chargers, which in the future will all be micro-USB. A universal connection would mean that you won't have to throw out the proprietary lot supplied with a mobile phone whenever you change the handset, and would also be designed to be 50% greener in standby mode. All five mobile phone companies have signed up to the plan, which according to the GSMA will be sorted by 2012, when the majority of handhelds shipped will adhere to this standard.

MWC 2009: Nokia Unveils The 8MP N86 Camera-Phone
Nokia has finally dived into the 8MP camera-phone market with the N86, which was unveiled yesterday at the MWC. This is very much a camera-oriented phone, with a Carl Zeiss Tessar lens, dual LED flash, wide-angle mode and autofocus, plus it can snap video at 30fps in 640x480 resolution. It offers a 2.6" display at 240x320 resolution (though no touchscreen) and is a fairly chunky little number at 103x51x17mm weighing 149g.

Nokia Unveils GPS-Oriented Handsets At MWC
Nokia will obviously be pretty busy announcing swathes of new mobile phone models and technologies at MWC 2009 this week, two of the more interesting of which so far are the 6710 Navigator and 6720 Classic. The former is a slide design oriented around GPS operation, featuring 'drive and walk' navigation, a dedicated navigation control, touchpad for zooming and full regional maps. There's a compass built in and the screen is apparently 'tuned' for clear viewing in bright daylight, with route planning either done on the phone itself or synchronised from a PC.
